How to Choose The Best Business to Invest in For 2011

I personally have several friends and a few family members who are either unsatisfied with their current job or business or are just plain looking for something more. Many times the most challenging dilemma they face is choosing the best business to invest in for 2011. People are always wanting to know what hottest new business ideas are or what the future promises to reward. When it comes down to it there aren't really any promises when it comes to the future and being trendy in choosing the best business opportunities to start might not turn out to be as profitable as you may think. The popular business idea isn't always the one that put cash in your pocket, simple as that...

It seems most profitable businesses are either improvements on an existing way of doing things or somehow involve innovation. I like to urge people to look for the best business to invest in by starting with their own field of reference, their experience, or their field. It just makes sense. I wrote an article a while back that talks about investing in yourself, you should give that a read when your done.

I'm also a supporter of starting a business idea that will deliver the end results your looking for. Let's face it not everyone is even remotely interested in the business or industry they have been stuck in for years. Often times decisions are made out of "apparent necessity" rather than a sense of purpose and where you may find yourself in a career or business may be no different.

Choosing the Best Business to Invest in for 2011

Starting with what you want is probably still the most intelligent way to decide what business is best to invest in for 2011. As I'm sure you know, not all businesses are equal. Here are a few common questions to ask yourself when trying to narrow down you start up possibilities:

  • How much money are you willing to invest?
  • How much time can you commit to your new business opportunity?
  • Which ideas will your family and loved ones support?
  • How much money do you wish to make?
  • Do you wish to sell the business or pass it down to family?
  • What are your personal life goals and will the business idea assist in those?

These ideas were helpful to me several years back when I was looking to make a major change. I learned what I wanted based mostly on what I didn't want. For me the top stressors where what I wanted to eliminate. The top things that annoyed me about the business I was in were:

  1. Little control over cashflow (when I got paid)
  2. Rising expenses as business grew (not scalable)
  3. Employees!
  4. Insurance expenses were ridiculous.
  5. No time freedom.

Obviously the business I was in (commercial construction) didn't start out this way for me. But it seemed like in order to move forward and grow the business successfully all these "things" either had to be accepted or eliminated, and eliminating most of them just wasn't an option. So I started looking for a business that would offer these things. For some more specific "business sense" ideas on choosing the best business, you could read the article I wrote on the "best business to start for a beginner".

You see, I wasn't afraid to work, you probably aren't either and that's why it's important to make sure your working hard for something you believe in, whatever that might be. It's really no different when it comes to investing, I read an article the other day that talked about choosing the best investments to make money and not loose your shirt.

It is my hope that this will help you in your quest for the best business to invest in for 2011.

Any thoughts?
