"The Chinese use two brush strokes to write the word ' crisis.' One brush stroke stands for danger; the other for opportunity. In a crisis, be aware of the danger- but recognize the opportunity."
By John F. Kennedy
I remember back to the spring of 2006, I was preparing for another season of commercial construction projects wondering what the heck the year had in store. Its a funny thing with that type of business, its like starting a new business every spring. Cash flow stops, employees are laid off, and everyone just seems to hibernate.
Small business profitability is simple I think at first, the less you spend the more you make, right? Well not exactly. As I went along it was obvious that if I purchased this piece of equipment or put a shop or yard in this certain location it would really pay off in the long run. Well long story short, after a office in town, 30 plus employees, uniforms, 5 or 6 work vehicles, 90 thousand a year in workers comp, stolen equipment, and bla, bla, bla, Profitability seemed to get choked right out.
I could go on and on about ways to increase small business profitability, you likely have heard them all. We live in such flow of available information, most people would have no problem making decisions on a daily basis that helped to increase the profitability of their small business. Here's a question most people won't ask: Is this the business to be in right now? That's the question to ask. Ask it when your up and ask it when your down.
The entrepreneurs that rake in the big profits aren't trying to "do it better than the next guy, or faster or what ever" they find a fat market they have interest in and develop a way to tap into that market. I'm not saying you will profit by being a fad chaser, you won't. Business Trends do need to impact your entrepreneurial decisions though.
Some trends come along and become a part of the economy for decades. A right decision at the right time with regards to an emerging trend can produce results that will impact generations. I'm talking big trends. Farming, transportation, manufacturing, no really, well ok, trends usually take place inside an industry. Not so much transportation, but the way things are moved. The people who converted their buggy making into car making did pretty good, right? (fisher body, GM)
High profit small business ideas are today becoming more and more accessible to the average person. The way a person makes there income is changing. This in itself is an emerging trend. Entrepreneurs want freedom, lifestyle, and money to do what they want. Being Middle class is not the destination it once was. There are reports that the middle class is "disappearing" and it is certainly not the goal of ambitious Americans anymore.
