According to the book, "The Two Income Trap" Households with children are 75%, get that, 75%, more likely to have their homes foreclosed. And more that twice as likely to file for bankruptcy. Statistics show that in 2002, 1.6 million people filed for bankruptcy, many were middle class families, or two income households. In the book they state that the single best predictor of bankruptcy is having a child. Speaking of children, this is a hilarious baby video.

Mothers having to choose to go back to work full time is hard enough I'm sure, I'm not a mom, but I've seen the look in a new mothers eye when you ask about the child that had to go to day care at 6 am. But what we are seeing here is a literal collapse when the mother takes off work to HAVE the child! I call it the second income myth, go look at this calculator, fill it out and come back...... So where does playing by the rules and working extra hard get the average American family?

The lack of a clear understanding of the second income is one of the most tragic plights of ignorance of our times I believe. Don't listen to me check out this second income calculator. Here try a second opinion.

The second income earner who earns 30-50k per year is, at the end of the day, probably working for less than $5.oo per hour, and that is very optimistic. Meaning grandmas watching the little ones for eight hours, you wear your current wardrobe, you drive less that 20 miles to work in a compact car... etc.

Another option to a job or career is a part time home based business. I write here and at another blog, so I get around a bit. Stay at home moms have a very strong presence on the Internet with home based businesses that are run part time. I operate a home business that is family friendly, fun, and valuable to the whole person.

We have a ton of ex-second income employees, a few of whom are top income earner's, top income meaning 700-800k ish. Granted, that is not the norm, but what a difference. Both came from regular old jobs by the way.

Starting a home business on a part time basis is an excellent option for an endless list of reasons, and I'm not getting into that here. The bottom line is if your treading water, find a way to stop treading water then, think for a week or two, get on the same page and move forward in a productive direction.

I'm on a soap box here, my closing thought is this. Carving out one hour each day to plan, work on, decide, and develop the life you would like to have is OK. If you ONLY manage, react, and juggle the situation at hand, you will always have that situation at hand. Remember, nothing happens until something moves.

In 2006 I first had the thought of starting a business that would simply give me more flexibility and did not grow as a burden as it became a success.
