Hyouka 01: First Impressions

Hyouka has arrived! ~ yay.  One of the most anticipated shows of the season knows how to be fashionably late, wowing us with its gorgeous animation and wonderful OP from the start!

For an introduction, it managed to reel us in with its iridescent colors and hints of mystery.  With Oreki, Houtarou playing the narrator, he slowly but surely drags us into the mysterious world of Hyouka. Similarly, Clannad and Haruhi begin their story in the same fashion - with a seemingly dull character taking reign over a series.  It is of no coincidence of course since they all happen to be produced by KyoAni.  I think it's safe to assume that the inside of Hotarou's mind will frequently be exposed.

As for the characters, we are introduced to 3 main characters in this episode and it looks like the second episode will focus on its fourth member Ibara, Mayaka.  First in line we have, Houtarou, a rather sluggish kid who lives his life as inactively as possible.  He believes in saving energy and taking shortcuts.  It is a way of life ;)  However, he seems to have developed an interest for Chitanda, Eru, a rather curious girl who has a knack for growing plants in an attempt to coerce people into things :P  A supernatural ability?  Or is it simply a beautifully exaggerated picturization?

Last, but not least we have Fukube, Satoshi - Oreki's partner in crime and Hyouka's comedic relief. He claims to be a walking database full of knowledge and things to be memorized.  A skill that might come in handy later on.

In terms of plot, there was little to none in this episode besides a lot of interaction and conspicuous dialogue between the characters.  It was kind of boring to be honest.  Unless you like exaggerated dialogue.  However, it was a pretty dull introduction to begin with.  Lets just hope the next episode manages to wow us with something other than its animation.
