Many people turn to a home based business to increase the overall household income. When you think in terms of income from a home based business its important to remember $5 bucks is a lot closer to $5 buck you might earn from a job.
Besides the tax advantages, like not paying them, that you get with a home based business income, there are also many practical benefits.

First, the obvious, you don't have to drive to your home based business enterprise. It's likely a 2 minute commute, down a flight of stairs or into the other room. A job provides a box and after you've been working at a place for a bit, there really isn't a ton of thinking that goes on.... in some cases...
Staying balanced and separating your working time from family time and hobby time and personal development time is crucial to sustained success with a small home based business.
I don't think it has to be a black/white, yes/no decision when your contemplating starting a home based business to increase household income. Many home based business opportunities are turnkey and only require a couple hours a day.
